Chicago's 1933 Century of Progress International Exposition opened that May on the lakefront at Northerly Island and along the shore of Lake Michigan, marking the city's centennial and the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition that had made Chicago famous decades earlier. The fair arrived in the depths of the Great Depression, when Chicago's stockyards, steel mills and railroad yards were running far below capacity and unemployment was severe. Organizers promoted it as a bright spot, and the fairgrounds drew millions of visitors that summer, with exhibits on science, transportation and new industrial design. Residents who walked the grounds would have known it as a rare public celebration in hard times, a lakefront spectacle built from modernist architecture and temporary pavilions.
