The World's Columbian Exposition opened in Chicago in 1893 to mark the 400th anniversary of Columbus reaching the Americas, and the fairgrounds in Jackson Park along the lakefront were the center of the city's attention that year. Chicago had been rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1871 and had grown into one of the largest cities in the country, with its meatpacking, grain elevators, and rail yards drawing workers from across Europe and the rural Midwest. The fair's neoclassical "White City," designed under the direction of Daniel Burnham and Frederick Law Olmsted's landscape team, showcased electric lighting, new machinery, and exhibits from dozens of nations. Visitors also encountered the fair's sharp contrasts, since the Midway Plaisance held popular attractions while the economic depression that began in 1893 hit the city's workers hard just as the gates opened.
