The 1933 Century of Progress International Exposition, seen here on Chicago's lakefront, opened in late May 1933 to mark the centennial of the city's incorporation in 1833. Chicago was then the country's second-largest city, and its stockyards, meatpacking houses, steel mills and rail yards had been hit hard by the Depression. Organizers built the grounds on filled land along the shore, financing much of the work with private money rather than public funds. The fair promised a look at industrial and scientific progress, and many residents hoped its crowds would bring spending back to downtown hotels, restaurants and shops. Attendance over the two seasons ran into the millions, and the fair's illuminated, modern buildings gave Chicago a national reputation for optimism at a grim moment.
