Chicago in 1918 was the rail and commerce center of the Midwest, with the Union Stock Yards processing enormous numbers of hogs and cattle and factories producing steel, machinery, and clothing. The 1920 census counted about 2.7 million residents, and during the war they bought Liberty Bonds and sent sons to training camps and to France. Factories and rail yards had been turned largely to war production since the United States entered the conflict in April 1917, and this government exhibition reflected that effort. In the fall, an influenza epidemic led the city to close schools, theaters, and public gatherings, and the armistice of November 11 ended the fighting.
