North Western College in Naperville, Illinois, in 1913 was a small church-affiliated school in a farm town about 30 miles west of Chicago. Naperville's economy rested on agriculture, dairying, and local trade, and the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy line that ran through town let farmers and merchants ship grain, livestock, and dairy goods to Chicago markets. The college drew mostly students from the surrounding counties and from families with German and Protestant roots, and for many of them it was the nearest route to higher education. Campus life in these years centered on chapel, literary societies, and athletics, and the school's buildings and grounds were the town's most visible institution apart from its churches and businesses. The school later became North Central College, which is the name it carries today.
