Knox College in Galesburg, Illinois, stood on a green campus in 1914, with Old Main, built in the late 1850s, still at its center. The college had been founded in 1837 by abolitionists, and it had hosted one of the Lincoln-Douglas debates in 1858, a memory townspeople still valued. Galesburg's economy rested heavily on railroad shops and manufacturing, and its population included a large Swedish community that had settled there in the decades after the Civil War. For residents, the college and the rail yards were the two institutions that gave the city its identity.
