Galesburg, Illinois, in 1914 was a railroad and manufacturing town in the western part of the state, shaped by the shops and yards of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy line and by a range of local factories. Knox College, founded in 1837 by antislavery activists, anchored its civic and cultural life, and the Knox Conservatory of Music was one of the institutions that drew students and visitors to the campus. Residents knew the town for its college and for the 1858 Lincoln-Douglas debate held there, a point of local pride that the campus leaned on for its reputation. This photograph records the conservatory and its grounds at the moment when the college was expanding its arts programs in the years before the First World War.
