Bradley Polytechnic Institute in Peoria, Illinois, was a familiar landmark to residents in 1914. The school opened in 1897 with funds from the estate of Lydia Moss Bradley, who left money for a college focused on technical and manual training. Its graduates were meant to fill skilled jobs in a city whose economy rested on distilling, grain trade, and farm-equipment manufacturing along the Illinois River. Peoria's factories and rail connections drew workers and families, and the institute gave the city a point of civic pride. For many local people, the campus stood for the idea that practical education could support industrial work.
