Elgin, Illinois, a Fox River manufacturing town west of Chicago, was in 1914 closely tied to the Elgin National Watch Company, which had been founded there in 1864 and grew into one of the best-known American watchmakers. The company's large brick works along the river shaped the town's economy, drawing workers from the surrounding farms and from immigrant communities that had settled in the city. Railroad lines linking Elgin to Chicago carried its watches and other goods to national markets, and the factory whistles and shift changes set the daily rhythm for many local families. That summer, war broke out in Europe, and while the United States remained neutral, the town's workers and business leaders followed the news closely, aware that the watch trade depended on export and on steady demand at home.
