In 1910, the Cook County Poor Farm at Dunning, on the northwest edge of Chicago, was a working institution where county residents who had no other means of support lived and labored. The farm grew its own food and kept livestock, and its residents helped run the grounds, so it operated much like the agricultural enterprises that surrounded the rapidly expanding city. Chicago itself counted about 2.2 million people in the 1910 census, and its stockyards, rail yards, and factories drew workers from across the Midwest and from Europe, which left many families unable to cope during downturns. County officials were then under constant pressure to provide relief at lower cost, a tension that shaped how the farm was run. This south view shows the institution as Chicagoans of the period would have known it: a large, practical county property at the edge of the metropolis.
