St. Augustine, Florida, in 1910 was a small winter-tourist town on the Atlantic coast, still living off the tourism that the Florida East Coast Railway had opened up after Henry Flagler extended his line south from Jacksonville in the 1880s. Flagler's Ponce de Leon Hotel and the Alcazar, both built in the 1880s, drew wealthy northern visitors who came to escape cold winters, and the old Spanish colonial quarter had become a deliberate attraction for them. The Alligator Farm, begun on the island that lies across the Matanzas side of the city, was one of the curiosities that visitors paid small admissions to see. Among the local population of only a few thousand, tourism, fishing, and shipping formed the core of daily work.
