Jacksonville in 1910 had roughly 57,000 residents, which made it one of the larger cities in the South, and its population was still climbing. Seen from the St. Johns River, the skyline mixed church spires, warehouse roofs, and newer multistory buildings rising along the waterfront. Electric streetcars carried workers between the central business district and neighborhoods spreading outward, a sign of how quickly city services were expanding. Racial segregation shaped daily life across the city, with separate schools, streetcar seating, and public facilities enforced by law and custom. Residents would have measured their city by its river traffic and its growing skyline.
