Jacksonville, Florida, in 1910 was a river port on the St. Johns River, still rebuilding its downtown after the Great Fire of 1901 destroyed much of the business district. Lumber, naval stores, and shipping through the port drove the local economy, and several railroad lines converged on the city, linking it to Northern winter visitors and to markets across the South. Residents of the time knew Jacksonville as the gateway to Florida's growing tourist trade, and the new brick and steel buildings going up after the fire marked a city determined to reclaim its place as the state's largest urban center. This view of the north side of the skyline shows that rebuilding in progress.
