Jacksonville, Florida, in 1910 was a river port on the St. Johns, still rebuilding from the great fire of 1901 that had burned much of its downtown. The new brick and stone buildings rising along the waterfront reflected a city that counted on its shipping, lumber and naval stores trade, and on the rail lines that met there. Its cigar factories and winter visitors arriving by train also shaped daily life, and residents would have known the city as the largest in the state and the main gateway to northeast Florida. This view from the south side of the river shows how the downtown rebuilt after the fire looked from across the water.
