Jacksonville, Florida, in 1910 was a busy river port on the St. Johns, shipping lumber, naval stores, phosphate, and citrus out through its docks and rail yards. The Great Fire of 1901 had destroyed much of the downtown, and by the time this waterfront was photographed the city was well into rebuilding, with new brick and steel commercial blocks rising where wooden storefronts once stood. Winter visitors arriving by steamer and rail kept hotels and tourist trade lively, and the city's cigar factories and sawmills gave many residents steady work. Those who lived there would have known the river front as the working heart of a city still recovering from its fire.
