Jacksonville in 1910 was the largest city in Florida and one of the busiest ports on the South Atlantic coast, with the St. Johns River carrying lumber, naval stores, citrus, and phosphate out to ocean-going ships. The city had rebuilt its downtown after the great fire of 1901 destroyed much of the business district, and new brick and steel buildings rose along the riverfront in the years that followed. Railroads converged on the town from every direction, making it a major shipping and distribution point for the state's agricultural and forest products. Winter tourism also drew visitors south on the rail lines, and the harbor's piers and wharves served both freight and passenger steamers. The panorama captures a working waterfront that residents in 1910 knew as the commercial gateway to Florida.
