Jacksonville, Florida, in 1910 was a busy river port on the St. Johns, and its downtown was still being rebuilt after the Great Fire of 1901 destroyed most of the business district. The local economy rested on shipping, lumber, and naval stores such as turpentine and rosin, while rail lines made the city a connecting point for freight and passengers moving north and south. Cigar factories employed many workers, and winter visitors arrived by train to escape colder northern weather. New brick and steel office blocks and hotels rose on the burned ground, and residents debated streetcar routes, paving, and the city's expansion. Many people of the time knew Jacksonville as the largest city in Florida.
