In 1910 Jacksonville was Florida's largest city and a major port on the St. Johns River, where steamers and schooners loaded lumber, naval stores, and phosphate bound for northern and foreign markets. The city was still rebuilding from the Great Fire of 1901, which had destroyed much of its downtown, and new brick commercial blocks were rising on the same streets. Railroads converging on the city made it a gateway for winter visitors heading to hotels and resorts farther south, while cigar factories and wood-products mills gave many families steady wages. For residents, the riverfront was the working edge of town, busy with cargo handling and passenger boats, even as local politics and churches shaped daily life on the streets behind it.
