St. Augustine, Florida, in 1910 was a small coastal city whose economy leaned heavily on winter visitors. Henry Flagler's railroad had reached the town in the late 1880s, and his grand hotels drew wealthy northerners who stayed through the cooler months and spent freely on lodging, carriage rides, and sightseeing. The alligator farm, a commercial attraction on the edge of town, was part of that trade, offering visitors a close look at reptiles that many had never seen outside a zoo or a newspaper engraving. Local life still revolved around the old Spanish quarter, founded in 1565, and the stone fort that dominated the bayfront. Residents knew the town as the oldest European-founded city in the continental United States, and they promoted that claim to every train that arrived.
