In 1912, St. Augustine was a winter resort town more than a colonial curiosity, and its economy depended heavily on the wealthy visitors that Henry Flagler's railroad and hotels had drawn south since the late 1880s. The Ponce de Leon and Alcazar hotels, both Flagler properties, filled with northern guests during the season, and shops, boarding houses, and carriage operators served them. The Florida East Coast Railway was pushing its line farther south that year, and the completion of its extension to Key West in January 1912 gave the state's Atlantic coast a direct rail link to the Florida Keys. Local residents of the old town, many of them with Spanish, Minorcan, and African American family roots, lived alongside this seasonal trade, and their streets, churches, and waterfront were the setting in which the tourist economy and older community life met.
