In 1912, Fort Marion anchored the north end of St. Augustine, a town of only a few thousand residents whose calendar followed the winter visitors who arrived from northern states after the holidays. Many local families earned their living from boarding houses, carriage hire, and the sale of oranges and vegetables grown on the outskirts of town. Sightseers crossed the fort's moat and climbed its ramparts to see its Spanish-era construction, while the nearby old streets reminded residents that their town was far older than the country around it. Beyond the coast, much of Florida's interior remained thinly settled, so St. Augustine's people took pride in their oldest landmark standing where the Atlantic met the inland waterway.
