Key West in 1912 stood at the end of a new rail line, and the island's sense of isolation was giving way to a faster connection with the mainland. Henry Flagler's Overseas Railroad reached the city in January of that year, letting travelers and freight that had long depended on steamers and sailing vessels arrive by train from the mainland. The cigar trade that had once defined the town had shrunk considerably by then, so the harbor, the Navy station, and the sponge and fishing boats carried more of the local economy. Islanders who had grown up with the steamship schedule now watched the railroad change how goods and visitors moved, and many expected it to bring new business to the southernmost city in the nation.
