In 1912, Fort Marion stood at the north edge of St. Augustine as a stone landmark that visitors climbed through and photographed, its walls built of coquina, a soft stone made from pressed shell. Its most unusual chapter had closed only a generation earlier, when Plains prisoners, including Kiowa, Cheyenne, and Apache men, were held in its casemates during the 1870s and 1880s. Army officer Richard Henry Pratt supervised some of these prisoners, and in 1879 he founded the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in Pennsylvania, which went on to influence federal Indian education for decades. Residents in 1912 still knew the fort as the place where those prisoners had been held.
