St. Augustine, Florida, in 1912 was a small winter-tourism and farming town on Florida's Atlantic coast, a place that had already been drawing visitors for more than a generation. Fort Marion, the Spanish stone fortress begun in the 1670s and known in Spanish as Castillo de San Marcos, had been a federal military prison and was then under the care of the War Department, which had turned it into a sight that visitors could tour. Tourism was the town's main business, supported by hotels built in the 1880s by Henry Flagler, whose railroad had linked the city to the rest of the country. Residents in 1912 knew the town for its old Spanish streets, its colonial history, and its mild winters that drew northern travelers.
