Key West in 1912 was a small island city whose politics and memory still reached back to Cuba and to the Spanish-American War. Cuban exiles had long lived and organized here, and José Martí had worked with the community in the 1890s to support Cuba's independence movement. Many residents still remembered the spring of 1898, when Navy ships and troops gathered at the island before sailing for Cuba. The waterfront and close-set rooftops in this view reflect a town that depended on its harbor, Bahamian sponge divers, and the Navy, and that had rebuilt its commercial district after a serious fire in 1886.
