St. Augustine in 1910 was a small city of a few thousand people that had long lived on its old Spanish founding, dating to 1565, and it was just beginning to reinvent itself as a winter resort. The Florida East Coast Railway, built by Henry Flagler, had reached the town in the 1880s and brought northern visitors who came south to escape cold weather. Flagler's Ponce de Leon Hotel, opened in 1888, and the Alcazar nearby anchored a tourist trade that drew wealthy guests across the winter season. Matanzas Bay, shown here, was the working waterfront where fishing boats, schooners and small coastal vessels came and went beside the seawall and the city's old fortifications, with the Castillo de San Marcos standing nearby.
