La Grange, a village in Cook County about 14 miles west of downtown Chicago, was in 1908 a commuter settlement that owed much of its growth to the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad, whose line brought residents into the city each morning and back out each evening. Most households depended on wages earned in Chicago's offices, shops, and factories, while the village itself supported local merchants, churches, and schools. Its streets, lawns, and tree-lined lots reflected the suburban ideal that drew middle-class families out of the crowded city during the years of Chicago's rapid expansion. Village government in these years dealt mainly with water, streets, and schooling as the population climbed, and residents would have known La Grange as a quiet, orderly place linked to the city by rail.
