La Grange, a village in Cook County on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad line about 14 miles southwest of downtown Chicago, was a commuter-minded community in 1908. The Burlington's suburban service had made it a place where businessmen could live in quiet residential streets and ride into the city each day, and the village's growth in the early 1900s reflected that pattern across the western suburbs. Local life centered on the depot, churches, schools and small commercial blocks along its main streets. Residents of the period would have known La Grange as a leafy, rail-linked suburb rather than an industrial town, a reputation that shaped its development for decades.
