Jackson Park, on Chicago's South Side, was the setting for the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition, and by 1908 the grounds were still shaped by that fair. Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux had laid out the park's lagoons and lawns, and the city had taken over much of the land after the fair closed. Chicago was then one of the fastest-growing cities in the country, with a population of roughly two million, and its meatpacking, rail, and steel industries drew workers to neighborhoods like Hyde Park, which had been annexed to the city in 1889. Residents of the South Side knew the park as a place for lakeside walks, boating, and Sunday outings, and many also remembered the fair's white buildings that had made the lakefront famous across the nation.
