Camp Zachary Taylor, on open land south of Louisville, Kentucky, was built in 1917 after the United States entered the First World War that April. The Army chose the site for its rail connections and space, and the camp grew quickly into a training cantonment where long rows of barracks and drill fields were laid out in a matter of months. Louisville already depended on the Ohio River, its rail lines, and its tobacco and whiskey trades, and the camp drew on that same network to supply and move new recruits. Local residents would have known the post as the place where men from the surrounding states learned soldiering before shipping out for France, and the arrival of thousands of soldiers changed the rhythm of the city's streetcars, shops, and boarding houses.
