Louisville, Kentucky, in 1911 was a river city whose fortunes rested on the Ohio, where steamboats, barges and the rapids around the Falls shaped commerce for generations. The city's economy leaned on tobacco warehouses, whiskey distilling, tanneries, and a growing list of manufacturers, while the Louisville and Nashville Railroad and other lines moved goods along the riverfront. By then Louisville had passed 200,000 residents, and its civic life centered on a Democratic political machine, streetcar lines, and the Kentucky Derby, which had been run at Churchill Downs since 1875. A panoramic view of the Ohio at this moment shows a working waterfront that residents would have recognized as the heart of their city's trade.
