In 1916 the campus shown here was taking the name University of Kentucky, having operated for years as the State College in Lexington. Its roots lay in the federal land-grant program of 1862, so agriculture and mechanical training shaped its mission alongside the classical courses it had inherited. Lexington itself rested on horse breeding in the Bluegrass and on the burley tobacco trade, with auction warehouses and rail freight linking the town to distant markets. Students and townspeople knew the school as a public institution that drew farm families' sons and daughters as well as city youth, and the new name signaled a broader scope for graduate and professional study. The grounds of that moment reflected a school in transition, still close to the farms that supported it.
