Owensboro, Kentucky, in 1914 was a river town on the Ohio, where tobacco, grain, and river freight shaped daily life. Warehouses and rail lines moved burley and dark-fired leaf from the surrounding farm country to buyers, and the town's economy rose and fell with those markets. Steamboats still carried cargo along the Ohio, and the river that brought trade also brought floods, which had left a lasting memory across the valley after the great rise of 1913. Owensboro's residents of that era would have known their town as a farm trade center with busy wharves, churches, and a growing main street, a place where the river and the tobacco crop set the rhythm of the year.
