Mammoth Cave, in Edmonson County in south-central Kentucky, was already famous in 1915 as one of the longest known cave systems in the world, and tourism was the area's main business. Visitors arrived by rail on a spur of the Louisville and Nashville Railroad and stayed at hotels near the cave entrance, where guides led parties through the passages by lantern light. The cave had been a commercial attraction since the early 1800s, and its guided tours drew travelers from across the country who came for the underground scenery and its long history. For local people in Edmonson County, the cave meant jobs as guides, hotel workers, and drivers, and a steady stream of visitors that shaped life around the surrounding farms and small communities.
