In 1917, Michigan was a state of factories, forests, and mines, and its National Guard was about to change from a local militia into a federal force. The United States entered the First World War that April, and Michigan's Guard units were called into federal service that summer and sent to training camps, including the new Camp Custer near Battle Creek. Detroit's automobile plants were expanding fast and drawing workers from farms and other states, while the copper country of the Keweenaw and the iron ranges of the Upper Peninsula supplied metal for the war effort. Men in the ranks, along with their families back home, understood that the state's soldiers would soon be leaving for France.
