In 1917, Grayling was a small north-central Michigan town on the Au Sable River, and its economy still rested on the lumber trade that had stripped the region's white pine during the previous decades. After the United States entered the First World War that April, the federal government chose cutover land near the town for a training site, and Camp Grayling was built quickly that summer. It served as a mobilization camp for National Guard units, most notably the 32nd Division, drawn from Michigan and Wisconsin, which trained there before shipping to France in 1918. The arrival of thousands of soldiers brought new business to local merchants, lodging, and rail traffic, and it transformed a sleepy lumber community into a wartime town. Residents would have known the place as the site where their young men began their military service.
