Grand Rapids in 1915 was a furniture city as much as a river city, with the Grand River still running through the center past factories that shipped chairs, desks and parlor suites to buyers across the country. The lumber trade that had defined the town in the 1860s had given way to manufacturing, though sawmills and planing works along the river had not vanished. Streetcars carried shop hands between the factory districts and the residential neighborhoods, while downtown offered department stores, hotels and theaters for local families. Residents knew their town as Furniture City on the Grand River, a name that reflected the industry that had replaced timber as its main source of work.
