Albion, Michigan, in 1915 was a Calhoun County town of several thousand people, and its economy rested on local factories, farm trade and the rail lines that still moved freight through its yards. Foundry and metal works near the tracks employed many local men, and their castings were shipped by rail to buyers elsewhere. Automobiles were beginning to appear on the town's streets, changing how families shopped and traveled to nearby places like Marshall and Jackson. Residents knew Albion for its churches, fraternal lodges and Saturday markets, and for a community that had grown up around its workshops and yards as much as around any single landmark.
