Detroit in October 1909 was a city growing fast on the strength of its automobile and manufacturing trades, and the Detroit Tigers' home ballpark, Bennett Park, sat in the Corktown neighborhood near the rail lines and factories on the city's west side. That month the Tigers met the Pittsburgh Pirates in the World Series, with Detroit's fans filling the grounds for the home games. Pittsburgh's shortstop Honus Wagner was the best-known player on the field, and the Pirates took the series in seven games. For Detroit residents, the Series was a rare moment of citywide attention, arriving in a decade when the city was becoming known as the center of the American auto industry.
