Swope Park in Kansas City, Missouri, in 1909 was still a young public green space, made possible by the will of Thomas H. Swope, a local real estate investor who died in 1904 and left the city a large tract of land on its southern edge for public use. Kansas City's leaders had recently committed to a boulevard and park system laid out with the landscape architect George Kessler, and Swope Park was meant to give the rapidly growing city room for recreation. Kansas City's wealth at the time rested on the stockyards, meatpacking, and its position as a rail hub on the Missouri River, and the city's population was approaching a quarter of a million. For residents, the park stood for a broader civic ambition: a city that wanted parkland as much as factories and railroads.
