Kansas City, Missouri, in 1909 was a rail and livestock center that had grown up where the Santa Fe Trail met the Missouri River. The Kansas City Stock Yards and the packing plants along the river in the West Bottoms made the city one of the largest meat-handling centers in the country, and its railroad lines carried cattle, grain, and goods in every direction. The 1910 census would count roughly a quarter million residents, a large jump from the town's frontier beginnings. Residents still spoke of the old trail that had carried wagon trains southwest toward Santa Fe, and its name was attached to streets, businesses, and civic pride in a city that had long since left the wagons behind.
