Belle Isle, a 982-acre island in the Detroit River, had been Detroit's largest public park since the city took it over in 1880, and by 1909 it was a favorite Sunday destination for families arriving by streetcar and by ferry. Detroit was growing fast that decade, with a population approaching half a million, and its carriage and stove works were giving way to the automobile makers who were reshaping local jobs and wages. Visitors to the island could see the Conservatory, opened in 1904, along with bridges, lagoons, and shaded drives laid out in the landscape style associated with Frederick Law Olmsted's office. A sightseeing tour of the island, like the one this image records, offered residents and out-of-town visitors a way to see the park's carefully planned grounds from one vantage point.
