Benton Harbor, Michigan, in 1920 was a fruit-shipping and lumber-era town on the Lake Michigan shore, paired with its neighbor St. Joseph across the St. Joseph River. Orchards and berry fields around the area sent crops out by rail and lake steamer, and the town's economy depended on those seasonal harvests. That summer, the heavyweight title holder Jack Dempsey met Bill Miske in a bout staged in Benton Harbor, drawing crowds of spectators and sports writers to a temporary outdoor arena. The fight came just months after national Prohibition took effect in January, when saloons had closed and public gatherings took on a new importance in small cities like this one. Residents would have known the town as a regional stop for a famous boxer as much as for its fruit.
