Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1919 was a manufacturing city of paper mills, stove and corset factories, and the Upjohn pharmaceutical works, and it still took pride in the celery fields that had earned it the nickname "Celery City" in earlier decades. The 126th Infantry was a Michigan National Guard regiment that had fought in France with the 32nd Division, a unit drawn from Michigan and Wisconsin troops, and by 1919 its men were returning to home stations for discharge. A formation photographed in the city that year would have been read by residents as a sign that the war was ending, after an armistice in November 1918 and a difficult influenza outbreak that had closed public gatherings across the state. Local families, veterans, and employers were all adjusting to the return of men who had been gone for more than a year.
