Binghamton, New York, in 1909 was a river city of factories, rail yards, and tightly packed neighborhoods wedged between the Chenango and Susquehanna rivers. Shoe and leather workshops, metalworking shops, and other plants in the valley employed a mix of native-born families and newer arrivals from southern and eastern Europe, many of whom settled on the hillside streets above the mills. Trolley lines carried workers and shoppers between the factory districts and the downtown commercial blocks, and the Erie Railroad's tracks along the river kept freight moving day and night. Residents would have known their city as a working town whose fortunes rose and fell with the factory whistles.
