Binghamton, New York, in 1917 was a river city where the Susquehanna and Chenango meet, and its economy rested on manufacturing, especially shoes and photographic goods. The United States entered the First World War in April 1917, and across the Southern Tier, local men were enlisting, drilling with militia companies, and registering for the draft that followed. This panorama records that military activity, showing the city as a place preparing its young men and its factories for a war that had already reshaped daily life. Residents of the time would have known Binghamton as an industrial center whose factory payrolls and railroad connections were now tied to the national war effort.
