Old Forge, in the Town of Webb in Herkimer County, sat at the head of the Fulton Chain of Lakes in the central Adirondacks in 1911, and the village lived mainly on the summer trade. Sportsmen, families, and guides arrived by rail and by boat, and the region's hotels and private camps drew a steady stream of visitors each season. The Forge House, a large hotel on the village's lake front, was one of the places where those guests stayed. The Adirondack Park had been created in 1892, and by 1911 the lumber and tanning industries that had once dominated the woods were shrinking, leaving tourism as the surest source of local income.
