The Glennmoore stood on the shore of Big Moose Lake in Herkimer County, in the central Adirondacks of New York, in 1911. By then the region had shifted from the hemlock bark tanning and lumbering that had cut into its forests in the 19th century toward summer tourism, as the state's Adirondack Park, created in 1892, drew sportsmen and city families seeking cool air, fishing, and boating. Lake hotels like this one depended on a short summer season, with guests arriving by rail and steamer and staying for weeks at a time. Local people in 1911 would have known Big Moose chiefly as a quiet retreat, though its economy still leaned on the seasonal visitors who filled its porches and dining rooms.
