The Catskill Mountain House, perched on a ledge of the Catskill escarpment above the Hudson Valley, was a summer resort in 1897 that drew visitors from New York City and Albany. Charles L. Beach had opened the hotel in the 1820s, and by the 1890s it was a fixture of the region's tourist trade, along with neighboring hotels in the Kaaterskill and Palenville area. Visitors reached the heights by stagecoach and rail. The Otis Elevating Railway, which opened in 1892, hauled passengers and freight up the steep slope from Palenville, and the rail line into the valley made the mountain houses easier to reach than ever. Many Americans knew the view from the ledge through the paintings of the Hudson River School, which had made the Catskills a symbol of the American landscape.
