Rochester, New York, in 1914 was a city built around the Genesee River, whose falls had powered flour mills since the early 1800s and earned the city its nickname, the Flour City. By the 1910s its economy had diversified. George Eastman's Kodak company made cameras and photographic film, Bausch & Lomb produced optical instruments, and clothing and shoe factories employed thousands more. The Erie Canal still ran through the city, though railroads now carried most of the freight, and the population had climbed past 200,000. Mills, warehouses and bridges crowded the riverbanks, reflecting a working city that measured its progress in factory output and new jobs.
